Hermann, Minnesota this summer, June 26 through July 2. We will be attending another Workcamp through Group Mission Trips
This year, we will be working in a small farming town. As modern mechanized farming methods have reduced need for workers, the population in Herman has dwindled, as the young people are leaving in search of work, leaving many aging relatives behind. In 2013, the population of this small town was 438. As this is a home repair trip, we will be spending these six days repairing and transforming homes. From painting walls to building wheelchair ramps, our students will be demonstrating Jesus’ love and compassion through their projects.
The theme for this week is “(Extra)ordinary.” In addition to completing home repair projects, we will be exploring Acts 4:13 to see how Jesus makes us (extra)ordinary. One of my favorite times during Group Workcamps is Thursday nights; in our youth group, this night is referred to as “cry night.” There are nightly programs each night, each message intensifying on the previous. On Thursday night, youth leaders are specifically given the time to pray over their students individually. My heart becomes full, though, as I look up after praying for one of my students, finding the rest of my group surrounding us, also in prayer, with many tears running down faces.
This week is going to be full of listening to, learning from, and loving on the people we meet in Herman, Minnesota. Additionally, this is an incredible opportunity for growth within our own group; to our peers and Jesus.
